Hockey Wilderness Podcast- A Minnesota Wild Podcast (general)

Now that we’ve had some time to process the end of the Wild’s season, it’s now officially time to start doing off-season things. We had Friend of the Show™ Adam Stafki (@NorthernRinkRat) of Along the Boards join us to discuss some pretty big topics concerning the Minnesota Wild, including:

  • Announcing our Super Awesome Pulling-Out-All-The-Stops 2016 Draft Party!
  • Why we, of all people, may have been underrating Nino Niederreiter
  • Chuck Fletcher’s denial-heavy end-of-year press conference
  • John Torchetti getting the first crack at the coaching search
  • Why we think Randy Carlyle is a poor fit for the Wild
  • Why Bruce Boudreau’s firing is an opportunity for Minnesota
  • Is Minnesota the most attractive job available for a coach right now?
  • Is Zach Parise and Ryan Suter’s influence on the team too great?
  • How expansion should shake out for the Wild

And much more!

The day after the Minnesota Wild were bounced from the playoff by the Dallas Stars, Joe and Tony sat down to put a wrap on the season and look ahead to the offseason.

Topics they discussed were:

  • Charlie Coyle’s crazy goal in Game 4
  • Mikko Koivu carries them to a win in Game 5
  • Prince sparking a comeback from down 4-0 in Game 6
  • For the last time: Was the problem with this team skill or heart?
  • Is Chuck Fletcher’s job safe?
  • Should the Wild make John Torchetti the full-time coach?
  • Do Jason Zucker and Matt Dumba still have a future in the Wild organization?
  • Where should the Wild play Mikael Granlund and Coyle going forward- Center or Wing?
  • Do we want to see any of our fourth-liners return?
  • Who in Iowa can we see making a jump to the NHL next season?
  • What’s one bold move we would make this offseason to get the Wild back on track?

And much more!

Sometimes, you have no choice but to be all by yourself. This last week, Devan Dubnyk has been all alone in net. And today, Tony reacts to Game 2, with no support.

He manages, though reacting to Game 2, college signings, and reader questions.

Topics include:

  • Minnesota playing a closer game Saturday than in Game 1
  • Why Antoine Roussel’s goal shouldn’t have counted- but why the Wild can’t blame the referees for the loss
  • Mikael Granlund’s great and terrible game
  • How to avoid alcohol poisoning throughout this series
  • How the Wild can increase the offense without sacrificing defense
  • What’s the Wild’s competitive window now?

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a guest representing another team, so we made sure to go out and get the best! Carolyn Wilke is one of the sharpest analytic minds out there, and she’s a must-follow on Twitter (@Classlicity) and on Today’s Slapshot.

We break down Game 1 between the Wild and Stars for a bit before Tony got really sad and moved the conversation to talking about the Dallas Stars’ playoff chances as a whole.

Some topics we discussed are:

  • Dallas taking a page out of Minnesota’s playbook in Game 1
  • Does the Wild have a prayer of beating the Stars?
  • Should Lindy Ruff keep Tyler Seguin out of the lineup to heal until Minnesota proves they can keep up with them?
  • Why aren’t we considering Dallas, and not teams that tanked to win Cups like Chicago, the league’s model franchise?
  • How the confusing Kris Russell trade helped the Stars
  • Dallas’ path to a Stanley Cup Championship- Can they pull it off?
  • What GM Carolyn Wilke would do to fix the Minnesota Wild

And much more.

We’ve got not one, not quite two, but basically two podcasts for you, all wrapped up in one kick-ass package.

The first was recorded Sunday morning, before the Wild clinched. Joe, Chris, and Tony sat down to discuss everything leading up to the Wild’s loss to Winnipeg, including:

  • The Duncan Keith suspension
  • Do the Wild really play down to their competition?
  • John Torchetti wanting the Wild to be more offensive

And then once they clinched on Tuesday night, Jack joined Joe and Tony to discuss everything else.

  • Minnesota clinching a playoff spot… only because Colorado is terrible
  • Should Wild fans feel good about making the playoffs?
  • What will it take for Minnesota to pull off an 8-seed upset?
  • Re-evaluating the Brent Burns trade
  • The Wild’s comments after clinching the playoffs
  • Patrick Roy calling out Matt Duchene for celebrating his 30th goal
  • Frozen Four Preview

After a two-week absence (work stuff caught up to us, sorry!), Joe, Aaron, and Tony sat down to discuss all the recent happenings with the Minnesota Wild (even though they've been kind of a bummer). We take a ton of listener questions, and discuss all of this and more!

  • Are the Wild bad, or do they just not care?
  • What’s the deal with Zach Parise?
  • First impressions of David Jones
  • Devan Dubnyk and Darcy Kemper are struggling. Do the Wild have a Goalie of the Future?
  • Is it time to give the keys to this team to the young players?
  • Which Wild prospects can we expect to turn pro this summer?
  • We’re asked to make a case for each of us to be the next GM of the Wild… so we did…
  • Pierre-Marc Bouchard retired this week, and we ended the podcast remembering his time in Minnesota.

Some notable firsts this week! John Torchetti won his first game for the Wild, then rattled off three more. The Wild won their first Stadium Series game this weekend. And for the first time in the two-year history of the Hockey Wilderness Podcast, we recorded the podcast in the same room!

After an insane week for the Wild that saw them fire their coach, climb back into the playoff race, and knock around the Blackhawks in an outdoor game, Barry, Chris, Joe, and Tony assembled at a conference table to discuss everything that happened including:

  • The Wild’s sweep of Western Canada
  • What’s different about this team under Torchetti
  • Whether the Wild’s offensive output indicates the team quit on Yeo
  • Re-living the North Stars during the Alumni Game
  • Checking up on some of our favorite Wild Alumni
  • The atmosphere at the Stadium Series
  • Erik Haula’s resurgence
  • Coach Q pulling the goalie with 7 minutes left
  • The Rozsival-on-Zucker hit

And an absurd amount of fun stories!

  • What went wrong for Mike Yeo
  • Whether Yeo given a fair shake by the front office

  • Mike Yeo healthy scratching Jason Zucker and Thomas Vanek
  • Whether there truly is accountability on this team
  • The ideal power play lineup for the Wild
