Hockey Wilderness Podcast- A Minnesota Wild Podcast (sports)

After a month-long absence due to lack of news, the Hockey Wilderness Podcast re-convened when the Minnesota Wild all but ended their offseason. Their two big restricted free agents signed this week, with Nino Niederreiter taking home a 5-year, $26.25M contract, whereas Granlund re-upped for 3-years, $17.25M.

Tony and Joe sat down on Wednesday night to discuss these moves, answer your mailbag questions, and do a Sandwich Draft. Enjoy!

Topics include:

  • Nate Prosser heading to St. Louis
  • Nino Niederreiter's new contract
  • Whether Nino's long-term deal will mean more ice time
  • Saying (again) that Nino is a first-line talent
  • Can Nino accomplish the 30-goal season he wants?
  • Breaking down the Granlund extension
  • Why weren't the Wild willing to commit to Granlund long-term?
  • What kind of player will Granlund be going forward?
  • Grading the Wild's offseason
  • Will Kirill Kaprizov or Jordan Greenway see time with the Wild?
  • We draft our favorite sandwiches. Who will be the first pick???

and more!

Flying solo no longer, Tony sees his regular co-pilot Joe return to the podcast to recap the Wild’s Game 3 win vs. the Stars, and break down all of the major plot points of the game.

Topics include:

  • Kurtis Gabriel joining the Wild for Game 3
  • The Jason Pominville - Erik Haula - Nino Niederreiter going off
  • Why it took until Game 3 for Minnesota pulling off a victory?
  • Mikko Koivu stepping up in this series
  • On a weirdly related note, possible landing spots for Koivu and Pominville this offseason
  • What to expect in Game 4
  • We put a spotlight on Joe’s inability to say “Torchetti” and Tony’s inability to be Tom DeLonge

82 games are in the books, and it’s time for the Stanley Cup Playoffs! Barry Campbell of Hockey Wilderness sits down with Tony to discuss the upcoming series, mostly from a Minnesota Wild perspective.

We covered these topics:

  • Niklas Backstrom stealing a win from Minnesota in potentially his final NHL game
  • Does the Wild’s 5-game losing streak into the playoffs matter?
  • What are we to make of the Wild’s streakiness since January?
  • Parise, Haula, Vanek injuries
  • Will Mike Reilly make the playoff roster?
  • Tyler Seguin’s injury
  • What does Minnesota have to do to impress you this postseason?

As well as these Keys to the series:

  • Will Minnesota’s defense be their strength?
  • Can Dallas maintain two first lines if Seguin’s hurt?
  • Can the Wild avoid turtling with a lead?
  • Is Antoine Roussel going to take Minnesota off their game?

And much, much more.

It was just one week ago that we didn’t want to talk about the struggling Minnesota Wild. Weirdly enough, it turns out that a 5-game winning streak gets people more excited to discuss a team. Who knew?

Joe and Tony sat down on Easter Sunday to discuss every aspect of the Wild’s hot streak, including:

  • Zach Parise re-discovering his scoring touch
  • Devan Dubnyk carrying the team
  • Niklas Backstrom’s return to Minnesota
  • Nail Yakupov trade rumors
  • Which Wild player has been most disappointing?
  • Looking ahead to post-season match-ups
  • Looking at recent college signings: Mario Lucia, Nick Seeler, and Alex Petan
  • Everything you need to know about LASIK surgery

After the All-Star Game, Tony, Joe, Aaron, and Jack sat down to discuss the game, and the very painful struggles of the Minnesota Wild. But don’t worry! There’s plenty of laughs, spontaneous beatboxing, and we even respond to some listener questions!

Here’s what we covered:

  • What (surprisingly) worked about the All-Star Game
  • John Scott’s MVP weekend
  • The limitations of Mike Yeo
  • First-half MVPs
  • Who needs to step it up in the second half? (No one says Jason Pominville!!!)
  • Why reports of tension in the locker room might not be that big of a deal
  • Is it a problem that Devan Dubnyk was Minnesota’s only All-Star representative?
  • Will the Wild make the playoffs?
  • And much more!

Joe, Aaron, Chris, and Tony sat down after the Wild's overtime loss against Dallas to talk about all that's been going on with the Wild over the last week, including:

  • Mikko Koivu's triumphant return to First-Line Center
  • What to do with Mikael Granlund?
