The Minnesota Wild took 3 of 4 points this week, but things are looking down in the State of Hockey. Injuries, injuries, injuries. More than half of the Minnesota Wild's Top-9 is out of the lineup for the near future, and it's most of what we talk about today. Is it kind of a bummer? Yeah. But we try to have some fun on this week's episode, regardless.

Topics include:

  • Injuries to Nino Niederreiter, Charlie Coyle, and Marcus Foligno
  • The Wild being able to gut out a devastating victory in Chicago
  • Breaking down Jason Zucker's controversial assist
  • Minnesota blowing a lead against Columbus
  • Landon Ferraro's first goal
  • Devan Dubnyk coming up short when he's needed most
  • Are these injuries dooming the Wild?
  • Should we change our minds about Chris Stewart?
  • Looking for the silver lining after this week
  • Luke Kunin debuts- should he be in a bigger role?
  • Checking in on Tyler Ennis
  • Can the Wild make a move for reinforcements?

After a month-long absence due to lack of news, the Hockey Wilderness Podcast re-convened when the Minnesota Wild all but ended their offseason. Their two big restricted free agents signed this week, with Nino Niederreiter taking home a 5-year, $26.25M contract, whereas Granlund re-upped for 3-years, $17.25M.

Tony and Joe sat down on Wednesday night to discuss these moves, answer your mailbag questions, and do a Sandwich Draft. Enjoy!

Topics include:

  • Nate Prosser heading to St. Louis
  • Nino Niederreiter's new contract
  • Whether Nino's long-term deal will mean more ice time
  • Saying (again) that Nino is a first-line talent
  • Can Nino accomplish the 30-goal season he wants?
  • Breaking down the Granlund extension
  • Why weren't the Wild willing to commit to Granlund long-term?
  • What kind of player will Granlund be going forward?

Last week, we bemoaned the lack of movement happening with the roster.

My, how things change in a week.

The Minnesota Wild made their big move, shipping out Marco Scandella and Jason Pominville for Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno. It's a big trade that we have a lot of opinions about. Listen to those.

You'll also want to hear about all of Minnesota's Free Agents, especially because you've not heard of a bunch of these guys.

So here we go.

Topics include:

  • The Scandella/Pominville trade
  • How that trade freed up much less cap space than most think
  • Playing Captain Hindsight with a Scandella trade
  • The inherent risk of Ennis
  • Why Foligno might not be that bad
  • Why Scandella got less value than expected
  • Nino Niederreiter and Mikael Granlund filing for arbitration
  • Breaking down the Wild's free agents
  • Suggesting names for the remaining needs for Minnesota
  • Departing Wild free agents
  • Why Dallas is scary again
  • Connor McDavid's $100 million deal

The Minnesota Wild had a quiet NHL Draft, completely void of the big trades we'd thought they might make- and certainly not the types of deals other teams swung at the Draft.

Tony sat down on Wednesday night to recap the Draft weekend, set the stage for Free Agency, and answer a ton of your questions about jerseys, potential trades, and more!

Topics included:

  • The Jordan Schroeder trade and it's intriguing return
  • Bob Woods taking over for Scott Stevens
  • Ivan Lodnia and Mason Shaw bringing skill, but no size
  • Recapping the rest of the Wild's draft
  • Discussing the lack of trades for the Wild
  • Are the Wolves now a more interesting team than the Wild?
  • Looking over the Wild's not-great free agent options
  • Assessing the new-look Wild jerseys
  • Why hoodies are superior to jerseys
  • Will the Wild avoid Cap Recapture with Zach Parise and Ryan Suter?
  • Could a Nino Niederreiter or Mikael Granlund trade be beneficial?
  • Matt Cullen's free agent status
  • Tony's ideal free agent signing
  • Best trade of the offseason
  • Best and worst of the Adidas jerseys
  • Favorite Pringles Flavors
  • An intriguing Would You Rather

Our good friend Dustin Nelson joins the podcast to discuss that and more!

Topics include:

  • The awful NHL Awards
  • Mikko Koivu losing the Selke
  • "The Pledge"
  • Whether Vegas used their leverage well enough
  • Does this new team even want to be competitive?
  • Whether the current Golden Knights will be there in 3 years

It's here! After months of speculation, of trade rumors, of positioning and jockeying to preserve as many players for the Expansion Draft, the day has finally arrived for GMs to put their cards on the table and decide who they don't want the Vegas Golden Knights to swipe from their rosters.

The Minnesota Wild were no exception, and they had to make some incredibly difficult decisions as to who to protect, and who to expose. Tony and Joe sat down right after those decisions were made public to discuss them at length.

Topics include:

  • The Minnesota Wild's massive trade this week! How will Tyler Graovac's loss impact the roster?
  • The Minnesota Wild finishing in second for the Jonathan Drouin Sweepstakes
  • Drouin's contract, and whether we'd want to take a risk on that
  • Minnesota's trade rumors with Montreal
  • The (apparently very real) steam surrounding flipping Scandella for Galchenyuk
  • Would losing both Brodin and Scandella really be as bad as the Wild think?
  • Why the Wild's "kids" should stop being seen as kids in trade talks
  • The Wild's over-attachment to their roster in general
  • We go over Minnnesota's protection list
  • How Jason Pominville's (probable) refusal to waive his No-Move Clause hurts the team
  • Why Pominville's refusal to waive is perfectly reasonable
  • Could Erik Haula be the perfect player for Vegas to claim?
  • Were the Wild right to expose Eric Staal?
  • Minnesota choosing Jonas Brodin over Matt Dumba
  • Can the Wild still bribe Vegas to avoid snagging one of their prized defensemen?
  • What's the best-case scenario for Minnesota
  • Oh, yeah! The NHL Entry Draft is also this week!

We're now a week away from the Expansion Draft, and things are heating up!

We assume.

No doubt the Wild's front office is working hard behind the scenes to sort things out, but the actual news getting out there is at a crawl.

But don't worry! Even with a light news week for the State of Hockey, we still bring it in a jam-packed episode. Because there's something about expansion we've yet to discuss.

What are the Vegas Golden Knights going to look like, anyway?

To find out, Joe and Tony decided to do an Expansion Mock Draft. Joe played GM for the Eastern Conference, Tony the Western, each deciding who to protect for their respective teams. Then, they each played Vegas, picking from the players the other left exposed. Once you get through the episode, you'll see a team that might well resemble what the Golden Knights will look like in their first season.

Topics include:

  • Pittsburgh winning the Stanley Cup
  • Nashville's electric atmosphere
  • Matt Cullen's victory lap
  • Jake Guentzel's ascension
  • Expansion Mock Draft
    • Which teams are in a bad spot?
    • Potential buyouts on the horizon
    • Who decides to protect 7 forwards/3 defensemen, and who decides to protect 8 skaters
    • The goalies potentially available to Vegas
    • Can the Golden Knights build a good, young defensive core?
    • The barren wasteland known as "The Available Forwards"
    • Post-hype sleepers Vegas could scoop up
    • Tony and Joe pronounce names badly!
    • They also argue about Nail Yakupov!
    • And of course, how will the Wild handle expansion? And who would Vegas want?
  • Jason Pominville's NMC drama
  • A glimpse at the Wild's new sweaters
  • The guys discuss their favorite candy bars
  • Who would pick the warm-up music in case Dumba leaves?
  • A ton of Pokemon questions
  • And more!

We're back, and it's trade season. The Expansion Draft draws even nearer, which means the Minnesota Wild will want to be doing some shuffling before that time comes. Topics included:

  • How Nashville managed to win without tanking
  • Building through trades
  • Why Chuck Fletcher hasn't been able to pull off a franchise-changing trade

Well, the Minnesota Wild's season ended not with a bang, but a hot goalie. The Wild were eliminated by the Blues in just 5 games.

It's not a fun time to be a Wild fan, but it's time to take a quick look back at the series, and then look ahead to the summer.

To help do that, we brought in Matthew Coller of ESPN and ESPN 1500. Matthew joins the show to discuss what went wrong, what's still good, and what's needed going forward.

Topics include:

  • Oh, my God. Are we talking about the Vikings??? THE VIKINGS??????
  • How weird it was that Jake Allen stole the series without looking all that superhuman
  • What the Blues did right in defending the Wild
  • Whether the Wild played into the Blues' hands, or if they did the right thing
  • Did Boudreau do anything different in the postseason?
  • Chuck Fletcher's end-of-season press conference
  • Who could even fill the missing "SUPERSTAR" role for the Wild?
  • Why trading Mikael Granlund could maybe be a good idea
  • Matthew weighs in on the expansion draft

Thanks to Matthew for joining the show. You can read his latest Wild article here, and make sure to check out his own Wild podcast.

Tony did a crap ton of stuff on Hockey Wilderness this week. Check out his recent articles here.

It's crunch time for the Minnesota Wild. Time for them to show what they're made of, and all that stuff. Maybe something about grit. I don't know. Playing the right way probably would help. What the hell am I even saying right now?

Anyway, Minnesota is fighting for their playoff lives after going down 3-0 in the series to start. A win on Wednesday bought them some time, but they still need to win 3 straight against a goalie that has pretty much slammed the door on the Wild this series.

Tony sat down on Thursday night to talk about where things went wrong, the reasons Minnesota has for hope, and answers a ton of mailbag questions.

Topics include:

  • A quick rundown of the series
  • Stupid Jake Allen
  • How the Wild out-played St. Louis
  • Devan Dubnyk's strong series
  • Why Tony is confident Minnesota can pull off the "Reverse Sweep"
  • Is Mike Yeo really coaching well this series?
  • Minnesota's Black Aces- should any of them play?
  • Mikko Koivu's Selke nomination
  • Who should Koivu run in Game 5?
  • Tony argues passionately against firing Chuck Fletcher
  • While he's at it, he argues passionately for Martin Hanzal, who is good
  • Why hasn't Granlund risen to the occasion?
  • Do the Wild really lack a superstar? And does that matter?
  • And a ton of fun nonsense questions

Two big things happened this week: The Minnesota Wild clinched a playoff spot, and the Hockey Wilderness Podcast hit the milestone of 100 episodes!

OK, one of those was more exciting than the other.

To celebrate these amazing achievements, Tony went to Joe's hometown of Shakopee to record an episode in person, just hours after the Wild lost to Detroit in overtime.

Topics included:

  • The Minnesota Wild locking down their playoff spot Saturday night, when the Kings lost to not-the-Wild
  • The hollow feeling of going from 1st in the Conference to backing into the playoffs for the second year in a row
  • Darcy Kuemper making it impossible to rest Devan Dubnyk
  • Minnesota's scoring completely drying up...
  • Except for Eric Staal, that is, who gets some props
  • Our favorite moments from the show
  • How podcasts have helped bring the Wild blogosphere together
  • A lot of thank yous
  • Does this slump mean the Wild should break up the core?
  • Charlie Coyle's big slump
  • Defending the Martin Hanzal trade once more
  • Is the Wild's team culture to blame?
  • What can the Wild do other than ride out the slump
  • Tony goes "Full Stalock"
  • Is Chuck Fletcher on the hot seat? Should he be?

Again, all the thanks in the world to every guest, whether inside or outside of the Hockey Wilderness machine, all the listeners who participated in the show, and to each and every one of our listeners. The Hockey Wilderness Podcast wasn't panicking last week when the Wild lost to Chicago.

Maybe they should have.

The Wild lost all 4 of their games this week and are reeling, having lost their Division lead with little hope of getting it back.

To make matters worse, Tony screwed up the audio of the podcast he and Joe recorded on Monday night.

But at least one thing got better on Tuesday: Tony sat down and flew solo as he broke down what's wrong with the team, what the Wild are doing right, and much more! Tons of mailbag questions get answered, so tune in!

Topics include:

  • Players who wore number 99. Get ready for some Rick Dudley talk.
  • Tony gets depressed comparing his life to Wayne Gretzky.
  • Why Dubnyk, not the defense, deserves blame for the plague of goals allowed.
  • What's wrong with Dubnyk, anyway?
  • Should the Wild rest him, or let him fight his way out of his slump?
  • Reasons for optimism in St. Paul
  • Why the Martin Hanzal trade helped, not hurt the team
  • Are the Wild tired?
  • Has a players-only meeting worked for the Wild in the past?
  • Comparing the Blues and Predators- which potential playoff opponent is Tony more worried about?
  • Would it have been better to target someone other than Martin Hanzal?
  • Someone asks why Matt Dumba sucks
  • Which Wild players have surprised and disappointed this season?
  • Should Luke Kunin and Jordan Greenway go pro, or go back to college?

And much more!

It's been 4 months since the Wild's last rough stretch, and fans all over across the State of Hockey (And no, we're not talking about Chicago) aren't sure of what to now that a new one has arrived. • The High School Tournament
  • Tony gets talked into liking St. Thomas

The Minnesota Wild are heading into a bye week, so we decided to take a step back and look at where the Wild are at, and where they're headed. Carolyn Wilke (Managing Hockey Editor of FanRag Sports) was kind enough to join us to lend an outsider's perspective, as we discussed the struggles of her favorite team (the Dallas Stars), the Minnesota Wild, and the shifting balance of power in the Western Conference.

Today's topics:

  • What's going on with everyone's favorite player, Antoine Roussel?
  • The very disappointing list of players who wore #95
  • Why the Stars struggles don't solely rest with their goaltenders
  • What's wrong with the Stars blue line?
  • Lindy Ruff's status as head coach
  • Why Bruce Boudreau is awesome
  • Seriously, he should win the Jack Adams this season
  • And really, he should have won it last season, too
  • Just retroactively give every Jack Adams Award to Bruce Boudreau
  • Why Minnesota shouldn't worry much about regression
  • What the Wild need at the trade deadline
  • Can they snag a Number One Center™?
  • Looking ahead to the expansion draft
  • Who are the elite teams in the Western Conference?
  • Why Anaheim is a sneaky bad team
  • Who's a scarier first-round opponent for Minnesota- Nashville or Los Angeles

All is right in the State of Hockey. Minnesota continued their winning ways on the road, their prospects did well in the World Junior Championships, and a couple of those prospects brought home the Gold for Team USA. With such a big week, we had to get an equally big-time guest, so we got Dustin Nelson of Thrillist, The Hockey Writers, and Sports Illustrated.

Dustin joined Tony and Joe to discuss all that happened, including:

  • Merciless Monday: Where we mock Star Sunday
  • Devan Dubnyk’s struggles over the week
  • Why Darcy Kuemper will be important over the second half and beyond
  • Zach Parise putting his game back together

Then after the break, they move on to the World Junior Championships

  • Getting excited for Joel Eriksson Ek’s well-rounded game
  • Jordan Greenway’s meteoric rise- Will he be able to be as dominant against stronger competition?
  • Luke Kunin shines in a defensive role
  • Kirill “The Ghostface Krilla” Kaprizov drags Russia all the way to a Bronze Medal
  • Where does Alex Tuch factor into this forward group now?

And more!

It's a New Year, and the Minnesota Wild are going to have to build a new streak. After dropping a much-anticipated matchup to the Columbus Blue Jackets on New Year's Eve, the Wild are looking to build on the momentum they created themselves. Joe Bouley and Tony Abbott sat down on Sunday night to discuss those positives that defined the streak.

Topics included:

  • Devan Dubnyk, of course. Is it OK to call him an elite goalie yet?
  • Jason Zucker becoming a complete player
  • Jordan Schroeder making the most of his shot- both literally and figuratively
  • Mikael Granlund's impressive season- why aren't we talking about him more?
  • Dissecting the end of the 12-game streak
  • The Chris Stewart fight and Matt Dumba fight/ejection
  • Is this Wild team for real? How can they avoid the annual slump?
  • A brief World Junior Championship update
  • Who will make the biggest impact for Minnesota in 2017?
  • What would be our ideal Minnesota Wild lineup?

Help start us off on the right foot in 2017! You can start by subscribing to our show wherever you get your podcasts from. We're in the process of adding even more places to hear our show, but your favorite podcast app should have us.

If you want to help even more (and you definitely want to), leave us an iTunes Review! You can find the link here, and in just minutes, you can leave us your feedback and help more Wild fans find our show.

We'll be back with a special guest to cover the World Junior Championships in-depth next week! Stay tuned!
